Annie in Sailing Boat

“When I refer to 'creative living,' I am speaking more broadly. I'm talking about living a life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than by fear.”

As much as I value living a creative life, there are many times when I opt for the familiar and routine rather than explore the unexpected.

That’s why it’s so great to be asked on a journey (literal or metaphorical) that I know will push me out of my comfort zone.

For such a recent voyage, Annie Särnblad invited me to set sail and illustrate her children’s book.

Along the way, I made more art in three months than I have in many years. My skillset was low, my process undeveloped, and my confidence wobbly. But Annie steadily steered our project forward.

Eventually, a set of pen and watercolor drawings emerged. Then there was a lot of redrawing and repainting and retouching. Then we ended up with an actual book.

Now I’m left with a souvenir from our adventure that I’ll be holding onto for years, and I’m looking forward to my next big trip.

Do you have a young person in your life? If so, you can find Annie and the Secret Language of Faces here.

And if you have the opportunity to venture into the unexpected today, I gently nudge you to be brave and leave port.

In the meantime, here are some drawings to float your boat …
